FAQ

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme):

  • What It Is: MCS is a certification standard for renewable energy products and installers. It’s a mark of quality that demonstrates the installer and products meet rigorous standards.
  • Why It Matters: MCS certification ensures that the solar PV systems you’re installing meet government and industry standards for performance and safety. Only MCS-certified installations qualify for financial incentives, such as the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) in the UK, allowing homeowners to earn money by selling excess energy back to the grid. Some lenders explicitly require that solar installations are MCS-certified to offer a mortgage on the property. Non-certified installations may be seen as a liability, which could complicate or even prevent mortgage approval.

HEIS (Home Insulation & Energy Systems Contractors Scheme):

  • What It Is: HEIS is a scheme specifically for contractors who install home insulation and energy systems. It ensures contractors provide high-quality installations and transparent, fair customer service.
  • Why It Matters: Accredited HEIS members must adhere to a consumer code that covers clear contracts, proper information about energy savings, and high standards of installation. Choosing a HEIS-accredited company gives customers added protection, especially with aftercare services and guarantees.

Both MCS and HEIS accreditations provide peace of mind, ensuring the installer’s competence and commitment to high standards for efficiency and safety in solar PV installations.

No, and at Silk Solar we will never install a system that does not make sound financial sense.

We understand that while going solar is often a smart choice, it’s also a major investment. A well-designed solar system isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution—each installation should be tailored to fit unique requirements.

Here are some key factors we consider:

  • Location and Sun Exposure: Ensuring panels capture maximum sunlight based on your geographic location and roof orientation.
  • Energy Consumption: Designing a system that meets your household’s or business’s specific energy needs for optimal savings.
  • Roof Condition and Layout: Assessing the roof’s age, material, pitch, and available space to ensure the structure can support the system.
  • Budget and Financial Goals: Tailoring solutions to fit your budget while maximizing the return on investment.
  • Local Regulations and Incentives: Navigating available incentives, permits, and any regulations to take full advantage of cost-saving opportunities.

At Silk Solar, we’re here to design a solar solution that meets your unique needs and maximizes your investment, only where it makes sense.

No, your roof doesn’t have to be south-facing to benefit from solar panels, although south-facing roofs generally receive the most sunlight throughout the day in the UK, which can increase energy production.

If your roof faces east or west, you can still generate plenty of solar power. East-facing panels will capture more sunlight in the morning, while west-facing panels are more productive in the afternoon. In fact, many installations combine east- and west-facing panels to spread energy generation more evenly throughout the day.

Our free quotations include energy estimates that comply with government guidelines, giving you a clear view of your potential monthly savings across the year. This helps you see exactly how much you’ll save with your solar installation, ensuring it makes sound financial sense for you.

As a family-owned, local business, Silk Solar “Will beat any like-for-like quote”. We don’t have the overheads of larger businesses and pass those savings on to our customers.

The cost of a standard solar PV system for a residential property varies depending on the system size, component quality, battery requirements, and property layout. But as a general guide, and based on using our standard solid black 440W panels (with 30 yr lifetime guarantee):

  1. Small Systems (2-3 kW): For a 2.64 kW system, about 6 panels are required. This system size would work for smaller homes with moderate energy needs and limited roof space, covering around 10-15 square meters. Fully installed from £3,950*.

  2. Medium Systems (4 kW): A 4 kW system would require about 9 panels. This size is ideal for an average UK household, taking up about 18-25 square meters of roof space and potentially covering much of a home’s daytime energy consumption. Fully installed from £5,000*.

  3. Larger Systems (5+ kW): For a 5.28 kW system, approximately 12 panels are needed. This setup suits larger households with higher energy demands, requiring 25-30 square meters of roof space. Fully installed from £7,000*. Systems larger than 4 kW require additional permissions and approval from the Distribution Network Operator (DNO), which we will take care of for you.

  4. Battery Storage: Adding battery storage will increase costs but they pay for themselves by storing unused electricity for later use. Depending on the electricity provider you choose, they may also be charged with cheap electricity at night that can be used to save money once the sun goes down. An 8 kWh battery would add between £4,000 and £6,000.

  5. Future Proofing: As with most things in life, investing more in your solar components brings additional features, future-proofing, and extended guarantees. We are fully certified installers for Tesla Powerwall and Sigenergy systems, both of which offer backup power as standard. These systems also provide the flexibility to adapt to evolving load balancing incentives and time-of-use programs, maximizing your savings over time.

How much solar PV could save you depends on a number of factors to include:

  • Your Location: (e.g., city or region within the UK).
  • Electricity Usage: Approximate annual consumption in kWh (found on your electricity bill).
  • System Size: Are you considering a standard residential system (e.g., 4 kW) or something larger?
  • Your Energy Costs: What’s your current price per kWh (in pence)?
  • Solar Usage: Will you use most of the solar energy generated, or export a significant portion to the grid?
  • Available Roof Space: South-facing roofs typically generate the most energy.
  • Future Energy Price Increases: ???

Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote. We’ll outline your potential savings with solar PV, tailored to your energy usage and needs. Get in touch today, and we’ll show you how much you can save on energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint!

Installing a battery with a solar PV system offers several key benefits:

  • Energy Bill Savings: With stored solar energy, households can reduce reliance on grid electricity, especially during peak rate times. This can lead to substantial savings on electricity bills over time, especially as energy prices fluctuate.
  • Access to Off-Peak Rates: Our systems allow charging the battery from the grid during off-peak hours when rates are lower. This stored energy can then be used during peak hours, further reducing costs. This approach, called “peak shaving,” is especially advantageous for households on time-of-use electricity tariffs.
  • Increased Self-Consumption: Solar panels generate power during the day, which doesn’t always align with peak household electricity use (often in the evening). A battery allows you to store excess solar energy generated during daylight hours for use at night or during cloudy days, maximizing your self-consumption of solar power.
  • Backup Power: Many battery systems offer backup capabilities, providing power during blackouts or grid failures. For homes in areas with unreliable grid access, this can offer additional security and peace of mind.
  • Environmental Benefits: By increasing the use of renewable energy and reducing dependence on grid electricity, battery storage reduces a household’s carbon footprint. This is particularly beneficial in regions where grid power comes from fossil fuels.

In summary: While batteries increase the initial installation cost, they offer long-term savings, energy independence, and greater resilience against energy disruptions.

In the UK, installations of solar PV panels and batteries for residential use are currently zero-rated for VAT. This means that, as of recent legislation, you should not have to pay any VAT on the supply and installation of solar panels and associated battery systems for residential purposes.

This zero rate applies as part of the government’s effort to encourage renewable energy adoption and improve energy efficiency in homes.

In the UK, as of recent changes to VAT rules on energy-saving materials, an EV charger installed as part of a solar PV system will be zero-rated for VAT, when it’s installed for residential use. This zero rate applies if the EV charger is part of a broader renewable energy project (like solar PV), allowing homeowners to avoid VAT altogether on both the solar PV system and the EV charger installation.

This VAT relief is part of the UK government’s initiative to encourage renewable energy and energy efficiency in homes. Here are the key points:

Integrated Installations: When an EV charger is installed at the same time as a solar PV system (or another qualifying renewable system like a battery), it benefits from the zero VAT rate. This can significantly reduce the overall cost of installation.

Standalone Installations: If an EV charger is installed on its own, outside the context of a solar PV system or without other qualifying energy-saving materials, it usually incurs the standard VAT rate of 20% for non-new build residential and commercial properties.

Residential Properties: This zero VAT rating applies only to installations for residential use, not commercial buildings or properties used for business purposes.

Taking advantage of this combined installation benefit can be a cost-effective way to future-proof a home for both solar energy and EV charging. For anyone considering both solar PV and an EV charger, the savings from the zero VAT rate can be substantial.
